Car paint is exposed to numerous negative influences every day. Dust, sand, road salt, UV radiation, bird droppings, tree sap, and chemicals all degrade the car's appearance over time. That's why more and more car owners are opting for ceramic coatings as one of the most effective ways to keep their vehicles in excellent condition. Despite their popularity, many myths circulate about ceramic coatings. To understand whether a ceramic coating is worthwhile, it's important to know its properties.
1. Ceramic coatings are not a film
A common misconception is that ceramic coating is a transparent film. In fact, it is a special liquid composition containing silicon dioxide compounds (SiO₂) and other advanced components.
Once applied, the coating chemically reacts with the paint surface, forming a thin but extremely durable protective layer. Its thickness is typically measured in micrometers, making it virtually invisible. The ceramic coating becomes part of the vehicle's surface and is not a separate material that can be easily removed.
2. It significantly simplifies car care
One of the main advantages of a ceramic coating is its pronounced hydrophobic effect. Water forms large droplets and quickly beads off the surface, carrying away dust and small contaminants. This keeps the car cleaner for longer, even after driving on wet roads.
Moreover, contaminants are much easier to remove when washing. The owner doesn't have to put in much effort when cleaning the car, and the likelihood of minor scratches during washing is reduced.
3. Ceramic protects against UV radiation
Sunlight attacks car paint over time. This is especially noticeable on cars that are constantly parked outdoors. Over time, the paint can lose its shine, and the clear coat begins to fade. The ceramic coating acts as an additional barrier between sunlight and the clear coat, thus slowing down the fading process. As a result, the car retains its original color and attractive appearance for longer.
4. Improved resistance to minor damage
Some advertising materials give the impression that a ceramic coating completely protects the car body from scratches. This is not true. While a ceramic coating is harder than a regular clear coat and reduces the likelihood of micro-damage from improper washing, dust, or minor mechanical impacts, it can’t prevent deep scratches, stone chips, accidents, or severe mechanical impacts.
5. Lifespan doesn't depend solely on the composition
Manufacturers often state a coating lifespan of two to five years. However, the actual lifespan depends on various factors. Durability is influenced by climatic conditions, the quality of the application, the frequency of car washes, the shampoos used, and the vehicle's storage conditions.
If the car is driven daily in winter, frequently washed with harsh chemicals, or constantly exposed to direct sunlight, the protective layer will wear down significantly faster. With proper care, a high-quality ceramic coating can retain its properties for several years.
6. A ceramic coating doesn’t replace regular car care
Some car owners mistakenly believe that they need to wash their car significantly less often after applying a ceramic coating. In fact, the opposite is true. Dust, road grime, and chemicals continue to accumulate on the car body. If the car is not washed for extended periods, these contaminants gradually reduce the protective layer's effectiveness.
To maintain the coating's properties, it is recommended to wash the car regularly and gently with a mild car shampoo and avoid harsh chemicals. Many experts also recommend regularly renewing the top protective layer with special care products that extend the lifespan of the underlying ceramic coating.
7. Ceramic coating improves the car's appearance
After application, the surface is noticeably smoother and shinier. The paintwork acquires a so-called wet shine effect, which makes the color appear richer and deeper. This is particularly noticeable on dark cars.
Even long after washing, the car looks more well-maintained than a car without a protective coating. This aesthetic effect is one of the main reasons for the popularity of ceramic coatings among new car owners.
